Headdress Sculptures

Matthew Attard

For the 'Music in Malta - From Prehistory to Vinyl' exhibition project, we collaborated with visual artist Matthew Attard who created ‘headdress’ sculptures inspired by the three costumes exhibited in the ‘Baroque to Romantic’ section of the exhibition.

Through a collaboration with Caroline Tonna, a leading authority on costume, they researched a number of drawings and paintings involving wigs and hairstyles of the same period as the costumes. Matthew then designed logics and motifs in aluminium wire, maintaining an organic process in the sculptures’ development. The final headdresses are works of art in Matthew’s unique style, adding yet another layer of theatricality and splendour to this section of the exhibition’s narrative.
